Mary is very confused. In her eyes the world is still black and white. Good and bad, male and female, gay and straight. She's yet not able to see nuances in scales, a grey between black and white and the colors of love.

For Mouse, never having been in love before, Paulie is a lesbian as sure as 1 plus 1 is 2.

Mouse: "You're a girl in love with a girl, aren't you?"

As she speaks it out load, Mouse starts to doubt her own words, so the "aren't you?" somehow sounds a bit insecure, looking for confirmation.
